Joseph Alexander Helfert, Freiherr von Helfert (since 1854), born on November 3, 1820 in Prague, died on March 16, 1910 in Vienna, was an Austrian politician and historian. From 1848 to 1860 he was k. k. Undersecretary of State in the Ministry of Education and Minister of Education 1860/61. In these roles, he fought for the equality of nations in the school system within the monarchy. He was the founder of the Institute for Austrian Historical Research (1854) and Franz Martin Schindler of Leo Society (1892), he was its president until his death. The Austrian Leo Society, by Pope Leo XIII. named, an association for the promotion of Catholic knowledge was. 1859-1868 was Helfert President of antiquity Association in Vienna and 1863-1910 President of k. k. Central Commission for the study and preservation of monuments. Helfert wrote stories and made translations from Czech. As a historian, he dealt with the history of Austria focusing on the Revolution of 1848. [Dietrun Otten, 8/2009]
