Fist haggard and bitter acting looks straight from his lectern on to Mephisto in human form. The protagonist, whose clothing matches the style of the 16th century, was interrupted just by reading the Gospel of John. The gloomy Studiolo is lit only by a candle, although many details in the room can be recognized. In the bottom shelf of the bookcase the works "Galen", "Alchemia" and "Hippocrates" are. In "Dioscorides" and "Theophrastus" can be seen. Before the shelves are some skulls, which almost disappear in the darkness, between scientific equipment. Ludwig Schnorr von Carolsfeld guide its representation of Goethe's Faust I. In dealing with the subject Michael Krapf tried the personal interest in the supernatural and magic Schnorr von Carolsfeld read. For the artist oriented strictly to Goethe's Faust I and would take over and the supernatural, occult and mysterious encounter scene between Faust and Mephistopheles.
