Original artwork description from the museum's website (© - The Metropolitan Museum of Art - www.metmuseum.org)

Between 1890 and 1892, Gérôme made both painted and sculpted variations on the theme of Pygmalion and Galatea, the tale recounted in Ovid’s Metamorphoses. All depict the moment when the sculpture of Galatea was brought to life by the goddess Venus, in fulfillment of Pygmalion’s wish for a wife as beautiful as the sculpture he created. This is one of three known versions in oil that are closely related to a polychrome marble sculpture, also fashioned by Gérôme (Hearst Castle, San Simeon, Calif.). In each of the paintings, the sculpture appears at a different angle, as though it was being viewed in the round.

  • Aluminium dibond: This is a metal print made on aluminium dibond with a true effect of depth.
  • Acrylic glass print: A glossy print on acrylic glass, which is often named as a print on plexiglass, makes an original work of art into brilliant décor. The great upside of a plexiglass art print is that contrasts plus details become more recognizeable due to the delicate tonal gradation in the print. Our plexiglass protects your selected art replica against light and heat for many years to come.
  • Poster print (canvas material): A poster print is a printed canvas with a fine surface structure. The poster print is particularly appropriate for putting your art print with a customized frame. Please note, that depending on the absolute size of the poster print we add a white margin of something between 2-6cm around the work of art to facilitate the framing with your custom frame.
  • Canvas print: A printed canvas material mounted on a wooden frame. A printed canvas makes a cosy and pleasing feeling. Your canvas of your favorite work of art will allow you to transform your individual art print into a large size work of art. Hanging a canvas print: A canvas print has the great advantage of being low in weight, which implies that it is easy and straightforward to hang up the Canvas print without the use of extra wall-mounts. A canvas print is suited for any type of wall in your house.
